Boston Fire Department is established.

January 27, 1678

The first paid fire department in the British Colonies, it subsequently purchases what is described as a new fire “masheen” that is brought over from England. Thomas Atkins is the first Chief Engineer, a position that is renamed Fire Chief in 1901. Originally staffed by volunteer units, it turns to a full-time force on July 29, 1837.
